Funding Cuts Protest
posted 23rd Sep < back to all news
Are you SICK OF BEING BROKE??
The Students’ Union are protesting that the Government has consistently been cutting Third Level Funding. The past eight years have seen a funding reduction of around €1,200 per student.
This is an issue that affects us all as students and I invite you all to join this protest.
Plan of action
Gathering at the Millstream @ 11:00am, Friday 23rd September. (Tomorrow). We shall make our presence known to An Taoiseach Brian Cowen in a protest and show him that we are not happy with the cuts and how they are negatively affecting our quality of education.
How does this affect student services??
Here are a number of consequences of these cuts in funding.
1. A shedding of nearly 1,000 PhD and Postdoctoral posts in 2010-2011. This counters their proposal previously, of their aim to double this number. Cuts in SFI Funding has forced a reduction in these posts by 950 by the end of next year.
2. Widespread cuts in Access Funding and the embargo on appointment to support staff positions.
3. Less contact time for students with lecturers, supervisors and faculty.
4. Cutbacks in tutorials and support services
5. A dramatic decrease in laboratory, practical and workshop activities which is crucial for science and engineering disciplines
6. The cuts are impairing the ability of colleges to provide high quality courses .
Hope to see you there,
Friday 23rd September
